Correlation between motor skills and 60m sprint from a low start in eleven-year-old boys

Pupils’ motor skills and motor knowledge are of great importance for quality programming and reprogramming, as well as monitoring and evaluation in the teaching of Physical Education. The research was conducted with the aim to obtain information on the connection between a set of motor skills and motor knowledge in the 60m sprint from a low start in fifth-grade elementary school pupils. 21 motor tests were applied to a sample of 152- fifth grade elementary school pupils from Split, Republic of Croatia, aged 11 years (± 6 months) that assessed their motor skills and one test of motor knowledge – the 60m sprint from a low start (Vlahović, 2012). The correlation between the set of predictor motor variables and the criterion variable of motor knowledge was determined by applying regression analysis. The results of the regression analysis indicate a statistically significant correlation between the predictor set of motor variables and the criterion variable 60m sprint from a low start. The value of the multiple correlation coefficient (R = 0.61) indicates that the variability of the criterion variable is significantly influenced by the predictor set of variables. The analysis of the partial influence of individual motor variables in defining the significance of the regression model showed a statistically significant contribution to two variables of the predictor set of motor variables, namely the variables Tapping feet against the wall (β = 0.30) and Polygon backwards (β = -0.28). This research provides guidelines which motor skills to pay special attention to so that pupils could successfully master the motor movement 60m sprint from a low start, as well as which motor skills should be influenced to achieve desirable final states of eleven-year-old pupils with the aim of achieving the quality of work in the process of kinesiology education. The results of this research will contribute to a better understanding of kinesiological education, especially in the domain of planning and programming as well as implementation and control of the physical exercise process (Babin, B. et al., 2013).
