The Role of Popular Songs in the Strengthening of the Croatian National Identity
The experiential, emotional reception of a musical work depends on a number of factors. Considering this complex phenomenon from a subjective aspect, the individual experience of a particular musical work is influenced by the time and place of listening, as well as physical, various social factors and musical structural and other qualitative elements. Popular music, due to its peculiarities, which are manifested through a simpler melodic-rhythmic structure, results in an intense emotional response of the listener even at first listening. A big role in this is played by the textual element, which can completely change the affective valence of the work. Based on the musical analysis of 90 popular songs from the Homeland War, the most intensive socio- political period of the Republic of Croatia, the paper discusses all the experiential elements that influenced the emotional reception and popularity of these works. The text's impact on the affective dimension of work acceptance is highlighted, as is the setting in which the works were composed and the significance they played in the formation of national identity.
