Fast reconstruction for PET scanner with incomplete sector set
Positron emission tomography (PET) is a noninvasive imaging modality. Analytical algorithms are faster and less demanding than iterative algorithms. Generally, iterative methods are mainly used for image reconstruction in PET due to the stochastic nature of electron-positron annihilation. Raytest ClearPET scanner is a small animal PET scanner. It total of 20 sectors can be found in the mentioned PET scanner. The Raytest ClearPET scanner which we use to measure and collect data is only partially equipped. There are only 8 sectors instead of a maximum of 20, four on each side of the ring. Significant distortion can be seen in the reconstructed image when using the (filtered) backprojection algorithm with only 8 sectors active. To cancel the unwanted effects, compensation must be done. The compensation is done by dividing back-projected measured data with the white image. In this way, we amplified areas with a smaller number of LORs and attenuated areas with a larger number of LORs.
