Protection of bronze by phosphonic acids films formed by various application methods
Long-chain organic acid films can form on various metallic substrates. If such film is strongly chemisorbed on metal or alloy, and the film is well-ordered and defect free the significant level of corrosion protection can be achieved. In scientific studies the most common way of film application is dip-coating but such method is not practical for bigger objects. The aim of this work is to examine other application methods like spraying and brushing for preparation of long- chain phosphonic acid films on bronze. Various parameters are studied like number of applications, solution concentration and time between consecutive applications. The final goal is to achieve good corrosion protection of bronze substrate in artificial acid rain, simulating bronze corrosion in polluted urban atmosphere. Studies are conducted by using electrochemical polarization techniques and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy in order to reveal corrosion behaviour of protected bronze samples. FTIR and SEM/EDS are used to examine the structure and composition of protective organic film before and after exposure to acid rain solution.
