The effect of emotion dysregulation on suicidal ideation and self- harm urges as measured on DBT diary cards

Difficulties regulating unpleasant emotions (e.g., shame, fear, anger, sadness) in a skillful manner are central to a range of psychological disorders and dysfunctional behaviors, including substance abuse, binge eating, self-harm, and suicide. These problems cause an enormous social and financial burden to family members, employers, and the U.S. economy. Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) has been shown to be an efficacious treatment for reducing problems with emotion regulation (Rosenthal & Rodriguez, in press). However, further research is needed to explore other mechanisms that interact with emotion dysregulation to predict self-harm urges and suicidal ideation. Accordingly, the purpose of the present study was to examine the link between self-harm urges as measured on DBT daily diary cards, problems with emotion regulation, and three established vulnerability factors, including interpersonal difficulties (Model 1 ; Yurkowski et al., 2015), Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) symptom severity (Model 2 ; Herr et al., 2013), and hopelessness (Model 3 ; Miranda et al., 2013).
