Online Timing Experiments Made Easy: Introduction to Psytoolkit

An increasing number of studies are being run in an online context. Running surveys and experiments can have advantages, such as providing access to a larger pool of participants. However, there can also be disadvantages to the use of online software for surveys and experiments such as restrictions of the type of questions that can be posed and the inability to random allocate participants to experimental conditions. Psytoolkit offers solutions for these problems and can be used to collect survey-type measures and reaction time data. Instead of presenting the user with an easy-to-use graphical user interface, Psytoolkit is used through a text editor in which each and every study characteristic is described. This increases the user’s understanding of the study’s specificities, offers greater freedom in customizing their study, and makes it much easier to quickly adjust the study by simply changing parts of the study script. This case study introduces the software, explaining how to set up an account and how the scripting language functions. By the end of the case study, the reader should be able to understand the basics of Psytoolkit’s scripting language, in order to modify existing scripts to suit their needs and to create their own original studies.
