Models of Political Reorganization of Bosnia and Herzegovina

Among the political legacies that have shaped the southeastern European peninsula as a whole, two should be highlighted that were central to the 19th century. One would be the Byzantium Millennium, with its profound political, institutional, legal, religious, and general cultural influence. The other is the half- millennium of Ottoman rule that gave the peninsula its name and the longest period of political unity it had experienced until then. The religious and ethnic rifts that have deeply divided the country today are deeply rooted in the country's history and did not suddenly emerge in 1990 or 1995 through external influences. The national elites successfully manipulate these distinctions, but they did not create them. The different ideas about the future form of the state of Bosnia and Herzegovina are often in irreconcilable opposition to reality and the social possibilities of the country. The first prerequisite for the creation of a self-sustaining democratic state is the acceptance of the reality of living in a divided society and enabling the free territorial and political organization of the three main ethnic communities. With the model of the political reorganization of the country represented in this text all three ethnic communities within the same state would finally win objective characteristics by which they can identify themselves as modern nations, which would allow the simultaneous development of dual loyalty of the citizens of B&H: the loyalty to their nation and the common state. All models and policies that divide the country and want to incorporate some of its territorial entity into neighbouring countries, as well as those who see the country as the state of only one nation, are unacceptable because they work in the long run against the same country. A stable B&H is only possible as a state of three constituent nations and all its citizens. Any solution that does not accept this fact will lead to centuries of tensions, wars, and revisionism.
