“You Are a Foreigner in Your Own City and in Your Own Country; I Mean, You Are Literally Like a Refugee”: The Role of Religion in the Lives of Homeless Women – (Hidden) Migrants

International documents and scientific literature provide very distinct definitions of homelessness and of migrations, which can make it quite difficult to spot the experiences common to both groups of people. Definitions of homelessness stress the lack of place of abode, while those of migrations emphasise mobility, leaving one’s place of residence and crossing borders. In reality, homeless people are also in a constant state of motion while migrants often have nowhere to live. These groups share the experience of uncertainty, poverty, and social exclusion, and these experiences are often gender specific. Based upon qualitative homelessness research conducted in Croatia, the meanings that homeless women/hidden migrants ascribe to their own religious experiences are analysed in this article. We have also attempted to discern to what extent these experiences provide relief when facing life difficulties and how this knowledge guides them in their everyday lives. These women have all experienced some type of homelessness while, at the same time, their status as migrants remains hidden. It is hoped that this article will encourage further investigation into the phenomena connected with migrations among homeless people, the gender particularities of these migrations, as well as the importance ascribed to religious coping when faced with life challenges.
