Sports tourism and event impacts
Sports tourism is gaining popularity around the world in the last few decades. Ranging from general recreational activities to high-profile competitions, sports tourism-related events can create a variety of economic, environmental and socio-cultural impacts for both participants and the host community. Based on the case study of Risnjak Trail, a well-established international trail-running event in a mountainous and less developed Croatian tourism region of Gorski kotar, this chapter aims to present existing and potential event impacts on the region. Despite being a business opportunity for private companies and the sports clubs that organise the event, it seems that other local stakeholders failed to recognise this event as a contributor to destination image and opportunity for promotion of their activities. Additionally, potential positive socio-cultural impacts for local stakeholders are still not developed to their full extent, due to the low level of involvement of local community public and private stakeholders in the event planning and implementation. Although a one-size- fits-all solution does not exist, other event organisers and public and private partners could use the recommendations provided in this chapter as a guide in designing their management and marketing strategies and events’ business models.
