The EU Identity Crisis: The Lessons from Socialist Yugoslavia Unlearned?
Socialist Yugoslavia and the European Community had and have been supranational polities founded against the legacy of the ‘fratricidal’ WWII. Thus, both polities purportedly avoided visible top-down creation of Yugoslav supranational identity. Namely, in both cases the supranational identity has been built as a form of cosmopolitan identity founded on (present and future) achievements. Since the identity-building processes were in both cases deprived of the concept of a common past and culture necessary to unleash an emotional attachment to community, in the case of the both polities ongoing crisis have been triggering a fundamental question of: who are we and why are we together?
