Pressure control ventilation vs. volume control ventilation in patients undergoing major abdominal surgery
Volume- control ventilation (VCV) is considered to be the conventional ventilation in patients undergoing surgery. Pressure-control ventilation (PCV) is another option but with not guaranteed tidal volumes with possibility for minute ventilation reduction and hypoxia. We wondered if PCV has any advantages in patient oxygenation and pulmonary protection in patients undergoing abdominal surgery with laparatomy because of shifting tidal volumes (TV) due to surgical retractors.
