Separation and Determination of Phenol Compounds on the Ion-Exchange TLC
The chromatographic characteristics of a number of phenols on microcrystalline cellulose (Merck), cation exchanger Amberlite IR-120 (Rohm and Haas) and anion exchanger Amberlite IRA-400 (Rohm and Haas) have been studied. Chromatograms were eluted in the solvent systems containing water-methanol, water-acetic acid and water ammonia mixtures in various ratios. The influence of the percentage of methanol, acetic acid and ammonia on the chromatographic behaviour of phenol compounds was investigated. The relationship between the pKA-values and structure of phenol compounds with the RF-values was determined. The best result from an analytical standpoint were achieved by eluting with water-acetic acid solution (H2O:CH3COOH=50:50, v/v) and by using Amberlite IR-120 as the chromatographic layer.
