Proposal for a Directive on Adequate Minimum Wages in the EU as a Tool for Reducing the Gender Pay Gap
The author challenges the idea contained in the Proposal for a Directiveon Adequate Minimum Wages in the EU that the increase in minimum wages would result in the reduction of the gender pay gap. Namely, it has been establihed in the economic literature that the increase in minimum wages is regularly followed by the increase in other salaries. Therefore one can conclude that the increase of minimum wages is not an adequate tool for reducing the gender pay gap. However, the dignity dimension of the minimum wages should be emphasised. This Proposal together with the Proposal for a Directive on Pay Transparency when adopted could be a step forward towards fair remunerations in the EU member states and could give the EU a 'human face'.
