Proculiano’s Panegyric to the City of Split (Le antichità di Spalato)

In the focus was a new interpretation of a hitherto almost unknown work on the Diocletian’s Palace written by Antonio Proculiano, the Chancellor of Split, published in Venice in 1558. The work was entitled Le antichità di Spalato – The Antiquities of Split. In contrast to other Renaissance laudationes about Dalmatian cities (and there are around 60 of them!), this speech is the most prominent example of what Hans Baron dubbed Bürgerhumanismus – Civic humanism, which was ‘one of the most influential of all concepts in the history of ideas’. Proculiano’s attempt to create the perfect reconstruction of the emperor’s palace remained the most well-rounded concept of its original appearance, up until Robert Adam’s excellent contribution to the field, exactly two centuries later. In imagining the whole of the Imperial Palace, in the systematic fusion of its precisely reconstructed planimetry and elevation, no one – except Robert Adam – went further than him. The impression of persuasiveness is enhanced by the perspective he outlines sitting in the saddle, whether riding on the terraces behind the perimeter walls or trotting along the roads around the Palace, describing living people at work or leisure, people inhabiting the Palace which is a real city, with clearly differentiated social stratigraphy. The palace he re-created in the spirit is not a mere agglomeration of palaces and houses, squares and streets, but a place of correlation, i.e. interplay between architecture and the human body in motion, between the humanized environment and the people living in the Palace, each with a precise role in its complex organism, fully identified with its whole.
