From Waste to Biosorbent: Removal of Pollutants from Water by Lignocellulosic Materials
Large quantities of lignocellulosic by-products and wastes are generated daily in the agri-food industry. In the context of the circular economy model, these lignocellulosic materials can be considered as a valuable resource that can be used for many purposes, from the production of bioactive compounds to energy production and use as adsorbents to remove pollutants from wastewater. The removal of pollutants (adsorbates) from water using lignocellulosic materials as adsorbents is achieved by their interaction with functional groups (e.g., hydroxyl and carboxyl), which are abundant in these materials and also provide a good basis for the preparation of anion exchange resins.
