Zrínyi Miklós verseskötete a kor európai irodalmában
The first part of this paper examines the European intellectual horizon (including the political, poetic and theological context) relevant for Zrínyi while writing The Syren of the Adriatic Sea (Wien, 1651), an original composition of a 15 books long epic poem about the siege of Szigetvár in 1566, and a lyric cycle of love poems and religious poetry. The author’s devotion for Tasso is well-known in literary history, his epic The Siege of Siget follows the example of Gerusalemme liberata in many aspects. However, it is not common knowledge that Zrínyi was profoundly affected by Tasso’s philosophy of history and his views on the role of poetic allegories in the understanding of historical reality. The Hungarian poet follows, mainly in his epic, in part Tasso, in part the traditional stratum, which strongly influenced the thinking of Tasso: the historical theology and poetic ideas of St Augustin. The second part of the paper offers a contextualization of Zrínyi’s work in the first half of the 17th century poetics. The main points of reference for The Syren volume are two schools of poetry, which are the polar opposites of each other: the literary agendas of Giovan Battista Marino and Maffeo Barberini (Pope Urban VIII), confronting sensual and religious ideals, offering the imitation of Orpheus vs Jesus Christ. Zrínyi followed the most intently the contemporary poets aiming for the coexistence and harmonisation of the two schools and the opposing ideological sides: Scipione Errico and Girolamo Preti. The lyric part of his volume is also a personal account of spiritual history, during the course of which the author travels from the ideal of the sensual poetry to the path of following the Savior.
