Privileged burials in the south-eastern part of the Carolingian Empire (Istria) and the Ducatus Chroatiae at the end of the 8th and during the 9th century
This contribution considers privileged burials of the social elites in the south-eastern part of the Carolingian Empire (Istria) and Ducatus Chroatiae as a vassal state. I examine how the ideas of self-representation were transferred by the Carolingians to those territories, along with the forms of architecture related to their functions. This is explored via some the less-known examples in Istria and summarized for the well-known ones from Ducatus Chroatiae. In conclusion, it may be stated that, as for the social elites are concerned, the new Carolingian territories accepted the existing burial rituals, their forms, their functions in self-representation and their meanings.
