The effect of pupils’ investigative experiments on their recognition of interference and diffraction patterns
Although the recognition of typical interference and diffraction patterns is one of the expected learning outcomes of studying wave optics, many pupils and students fail in this task. We investigated the effect of pupils’ investigative experiments on their ability to recognize typical wave optics patterns. Pupils who carried out investigative experiments were better at recognizing interference and diffraction patterns than their peers who were exposed to the standard lecture-based physics teaching. The results indicate the positive effect of introducing hands-on investigative experiments in the classroom.
