Effecting Social Change through Participative Mediation
The paper presents a participatory art mediation project conceived by artist Kristina Leko and carried out at the Contemporary Art Museum in Zagreb from 8 September to 21 October 2016. The concept envisaged university students in the role of mediators whose task was to engage small groups of secondary school pupils into discussions on socio-economic problems with the aim of effecting social change. Discussions were held in a stage- like exhibition that showed video interviews Leko recorded with families from different rural areas. The research conducted in relation to the project aimed to identify aspects of participatory experience based on the interviews with the mediators and the secondary school students. Five characteristics of the experience emerging from the data include participant profiles, scaffolding and preparation, modes of communication, institutional framework and perceptions of participation goals. In addition, the paper also addresses conceptual and methodological inconsistencies of the project that arise when responses of the two groups of participants are analysed in relation to the intended goal of the project.
