Higher fungi extracts as inhibitors of carbon steel corrosion in chloride rich environment
Abstract: Unlike plant extracts, higher fungi extracts have been so far largely disregarded in corrosion inhibition research. Nevertheless, prominent antimicrobial, antioxidant and radical scavenging activity has been found in many species of higher fungi (both in the fruit body and in mycelium). Therefore, in this research attempts have been made to evaluate the capability of higher fungi extracts to act as corrosion inhibitors for carbon steel in a chloride rich environment. The effect of fruit body extracts of higher fungi on the corrosion inhibition of carbon steel (RSt 37-2) in 0.5% NaCl solution has been studied using Tafel polarization and microscopy techniques. Ethanol extracts from 6 different species and water extracts from 7 different species were evaluated as corrosion inhibitors. All extracts protected carbon steel to some extent. Most of extracts showed an anodic inhibition mechanism. The most effective corrosion inhibition reaching 88% efficacy was achieved using Lactarius volemus species (water extract). Notable results (around 80% efficacy) were also achieved using the following species: Rozites caperata (ethanol extract), Boletus pinophilus (water extract), Armillaria mellea (water extract) and Trametes versicolor (water extract). Therefore, these results indicate that higher fungi may have great potential for future corrosion inhibition research.
