Characterization of polyester textile washing effluents
Environmental pollution by microplastic particles is a major problem that is intensely attracting scientific interest globally. Textile fibers, as a source of microplastics, are one of the most common, especially from the textile washing process. The amount of released microplastic particles in the washing process depends on the type of textile material, textile processing, but also on the detergent used and the process parameters. In this paper, the release of microplastic particles from polyester fabrics washed by a standard procedure was evaluated. The amount of released particles was estimated by gravimetric method after membrane filtration and subsequent characterization by microscopy. Physicochemical parameters of effluents and filtrates (pH, electrical conductivity, turbidity, total solids-TS, total suspended matter-TSS, total solute-TDS, COD and BOD) were also examined. Based on the obtained results, it can be concluded which process parameter affects the amount of particles released into the washing effluents.
