The Prevalence of Simple Kidney Cysts in Polycythemia Vera and Its Clinical Associations
Simple kidney cysts (SKC) are a known cause of secondary erythrocytosis due to SKC-driven release of erythropoietin. Considering that JAK2-V617- positive cells are hypersensitive to erythropoetin-induced signaling, this multicenter retrospective study investigated the prevalence of SKC in patients with polycythemia vera (PV) and its clinical associations. The results of this study suggest that the presence of SKC does not affect the clinical phenotype, hematocrit control, nor thrombotic risk in PV patients.
