Estimating plasma volume using the Strauss‐ derived formula may improve prognostication in polycythemia vera
Higher estimated plasma volume status (ePVS) has been associated with an increased cardiovascular morbidity in heart failure patients and in the general population. Polycythemia vera (PV) is a hematological neoplasm characterized by an increased risk of thrombosis. Measurement of plasma volume using the radioactive isotopes in PV patients has been used solely for diagnostic purposes and none of the studies so far have evaluated the potential impact of plasma volume on cardiovascular morbidity in PV. This retrospective multicenter study aimed to investigate whether calculation of baseline ePVS using the Strauss- derived mathematical formula may also improve prognostication in PV patients. In this paper, we demonstrate that higher baseline ePVS in PV patients may be independently (of high-risk disease status, leukocytosis and the presence of cardiovascular risk factors) associated with a higher risk of thrombosis. Therefore, calculation of baseline ePVS may have the ability to improve prognostication of PV patients.
