Thrombotic risk in secondary polycythemia resembles low-risk polycythemia vera and increases in specific subsets of patients

Patients with secondary polycythemia (SP) are often referred to hematologists for investigation of polycythemia vera (PV), a hematological neoplasm characterized by a substantial risk of thrombosis. This retrospective multicenter study investigated thrombosis-free survival (TFS) in 130 SP patients and in 109 PV patients. Overall, TFS in SP patients was comparable to that of low-risk PV patients and was even lower in specific SP patient subgroups, suggesting that SP may not be as benign as previously thought.
