Compatibility between subjective and objective tests for dry eye sindrome in patients with schizophrenia.

Introduction/Objectives: The aim of these research was to determine whether there is congruence between the OSDI (Ocular Surface Disease Index) questionnaire for subjective symptoms and objective Schirmer test for dry eye disease in patients with schizophrenia who taken antipsyhotic medications. Participants, Materials/Methods: In research was included 80 patients with schizophrenia (160 eyes) both sexes in age 25 to 55 years old which taken one of three chosen antipsychotic drugs (clozapin, olanzapin, quetiapin) five or more years. All subjects need to satisfy all included and excluded criteria. They all fulfilled OSDI questionnaire for subjective symptoms and was performed objective Schirmer test for dry eye disease and tear film stability. In order to determine correlation between subjective and objective test we calculated Spearmans correlation coefficients. Results: Obtained results correlation between OSDI questionnaire and Schirmer test for right eye is r = -0.74 ; p < 0.01 and for left eye r = -0.66 ; p < 0.01. Detailed analysis significance of the difference in correlations shows that there are not statistical significance difference between correlations. The subjective OSDI questionnaire are statistical significance and negatively related with objective Schirmer test where with increasing results on OSDI questionnaire, decreasing results on Schirmer test. Conclusions: In patients with schizophrenia there were no difference in results between subjective and objective test for assessment tear film stability and dry eye syndrome. In view of mental illness and the possibility of misjudgement of subjective symptoms, patients with schizophrenia need to be in remission of psychiatric disorder and then subjective OSDI questionnaire is reliable to use in practice.
