Vernacular versus Historical: National Style(s) in the Architecture of Austro-Hungarian Croatia
This paper focuses on various strategies in attempts to create a national Croatian style in architecture and tries to show the influences of contemporary political situations on these attempts. In three decades between 1880 and 1910, the idea of how this style should look like changed completely. First it was tried to be built on a mixture of elements pertaining to Gothic architecture, then on rural vernacular art and architecture, and finally, from the beginning of the 20th century, on early medieval architecture of Croatia.
