Byzantine Ideology, Identity and Ethnicity in Andrea Dandolo's Chronicle
The paper is set to analyze the 14th-century Venetian doge Andrea Dandolo's Chronicle (Chronica per extensum descripta aa. 46–1280 d.C.). The goal of the paper is twofold. On the one hand, it aims to examine Andrea Dandolo's views on Byzantine identity and ethnicity bearing in mind the usual Latin-Greek cultural dichotomy. On the other hand, it is focused on tracing the elements in the Chronicle of what may be termed as Byzantine imperial ideology and how it might have been refashioned and used by the chronicler to serve his own purposes. The starting point of the investigation is the 1972 study by Freddy Thiriet (in Revue des Études Sud-Est Européennes 10/1, pp. 5-15), which explored the image of Byzantium and the Byzantines in Andrea Dandolo's chronographical work. The intention is to expand on Thieriet's remarks and offer some new insights based on selected examples.
