The Role of Resilience and Religiosity in the Perception of Personal Experience Meaning during the COVID-19 Pandemic and Meaning of Life in General
The logotherapeutic approach is based on the premise that the discovery of meaning in specific and even very difficult situations in life can help to overcome life's challenges. The aim of this study was to determine whether there will be a synergy of resilience and religiosity in terms of the perception of the current life situation as meaningful and in terms of the perception of the meaning of life in general, although resilience and religiosity do not appear to be correlated. A total of 509 adult participants (NF = 359, NM = 150), with an average age of 35, participated in an online study that started at the end of the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic (in May 2020). The analysis included only the responses of those participants who stated that they were clearly religious or clearly non- religious. In terms of resilience, only the responses of those participants whose score is lower than the 33rd percentile and higher than the 66th percentile were included. The included participants (N = 269) were then divided into four groups: low/high resilience x low/high religiosity. The one-way ANOVA was conducted to analyze the differences between the four groups in terms of the perception of situationspecific and life meaning in general. Significant differences between groups were found, in a way that participants who reported low resilience and who were not religious perceived personal experience in a pandemic situation as the least meaningful, while those whose resilience was high and who perceived themselves as religious perceived it as the most meaningful. A similar pattern was observed regarding the perception of personal meaning in general, with somewhat more pronounced group differences. We can conclude that those who are both psychologically resilient and religious are most inclined to discover meaning.
