Modeling the long-term response of yield to heat stress for maize genotypes of different maturity
APSIM crop model simulations and stress degree days (SDD) index were used for predicting long- term grain yield (GY) respons to heat stress (HS) for maize genotypes of different maturity groups as a potential breeding tool for ongoing climate change. GY estimates for three maize genotypes (FAO300, FAO400 and FAO500) and SDD values were analyzed and compared for three remote locations in Croatia for the period 1991 – 2019. The correlation coefficients between SDD and predicted GY ranged from -0.51 to -0.62 across the FAO groups and locations indicating a slight trend of increasing negative asociations going eastward. Simulation of GY generally followed SDD values suggesting that the APSIM algorithms were responsive to severe HS growing conditions.
