Influence of intercropping maize with cowpea on forage yield and quality
Maize (Zea mays L.) and cowpea (Vigna unguiculata L.) intercropped in different sowing densities and pure maize crop were evaluated to determine the best intercropping system regard to forage yield and quality. The highest dry matter yield over two years was produced in intercrop consisting of maize population 75 000 plants ha-1 and cowpea population 75 000 plants ha-1 for the (MC3 ) 20.6 t ha-1, whereas the lowest yield 18.8 t ha-1 for the MC1 . All intercrop had higher crude protein values in dry matter 91 g kg-1 for the MC1 , 97 g kg-1 for the MC2 and 103 g kg-1 for the MC3 , than the sole crop maize (76 g kg-1). Based on forage yield and quality this study showed that among all intercropped forages the MC3 treatment was better performing than other intercrops.
