The tale of 4 countries: moral aspects of public policy through the relationship between population health and economic development
Good health is one of the most important factors of employability and quality of life as it enables full participation of the population in a society. Therefore, health is an essential determinant of economic growth. Health can be preserved and enhanced, and many diseases can be cured and/or their adverse consequences reduced. Expenditures for the healthcare system are an important factor in providing efficient health care, but huge outlays are not per se the guarantee of efficient and affordable healthcare provision. This text provides a comparative analysis of healthcare systems in four selected countries: Japan, South Korea, the United Kingdom, and the USA. Overall health has been improving in all four countries and life expectancy has been converging, with larger gains taking place in those countries that initially had lower levels of life expectancy, particularly in South Korea. However, a detailed analysis provides a more complex picture. The USA is the outlier, achieving suboptimal results in healthcare and therefore, lagging in various health indicators.
