Theatre Critiques by Franjo Bartola Babić 1934-1943

Through an analysis, synthesis and interpretation of newspaper articles available at the Newspaper Archive of the Museum of Slavonia, this paper will present valuable cultural and theatrological testimony in the form of drama and theatre critique by Franjo Bartola Babić published in “Hrvatski List, ” a daily newspaper circulated in Osijek, in the period from 1934 to 1943. Existing at the end of an epoch of Croatian literary, journalistic and sociopolitical era, Franjo Bartola Babić’s theatre critique forms the essence of what was forty years in the making as far as Osijek-based theatre critics’ work is concerned. It would seem that, with his writing, Bartola Babić affirmed himself as rarely any of his predecessor critics from Osijek did, having synthesized in his theatre critique his knowledge, objectivity, the journalistic profession, and his love for the theatre. Consequently, his work represents valuable cultural heritage and a documentary testimony of the history of Osijek’s theatre, development of theatre critique and the social context of the time, handed down to the present and the future and offering a plethora of information about the activities of Croatian National Theatre in Osijek and the preferences of Osijek audiences.
