Playful immersions - Playful Self and Work as a Game. Program Playing Video Games
The Seminar for Cultural Anthropology/Cultural History history in Jena offers a series of lectures with the title “Playing Video Games” in the winter semester 2020/21. The aim is to get closer to the cultural anthropology of games. The correlation between a playful Self and work as a Game is the main topic of the lecture of Petar Bagarić. In postmodernity selfhood is determined by some specific traits which are emerging as the effect of radical cultural overhaul. It involves the decay of once stable dichotomies that provided the understanding of essential dispositions such are subject’s relation toward self, others and toward the world. Work has lost its status of one of the main determinants of the subject and selfhood and its nature has been reshaped due to the technological environment and new organizational practices. Instead of work, game and play are emerging as the governing principle of new cultural ideals, the new relation toward technology and as basic way in which selfhood is perceived and experienced. In this lecture, dominant subjectivity/work-play relation will be problematized with an emphasis on the relation between of class and body
