Current Status of microbiological safety of platelet transfusion at tertiary care hospital in Croatia

Bacterial contamination of blood components has stile been recognised as persistent unsolved problem of uncertain dimensions and potentially fatal consequences. As we previously reported, the probability of bacterial contamination of platelet in our institution in early 90-s was nearly 0, 0004 per units transfused. At that time in majority of cases cogulase-negative staphylococcus was found(14/24). Although we have positive cultures of residual platelets from transfusion bags and clear clinical symptoms of sepsis and positive cultures of patients blood at the time of transfusion reaction, no one case was confirmed at blood bank side. In the middle of 90- s our blood supplier begun intensive work at quality assurance. After that time the probability of bacterial contamination of platelet units has fallen (figure I.) and all cases are well investigated from both sides. Our data show that continued improvement of quality of our blood supplier resulted that nowadays, in our institution, the probability of being exposed to bacteria is dramaticaly lower than presented decades ago.
