Water erosion is a multiply dangerous process that damages or destroys the two most important natural resources in agriculture - soil and water. Erosional drift quantity was recorded during the three-year investigation period (1993-1997) on stagnosol, albic, in the Daruvar area (central Croatia), under common agricultural crops grown in 6 tillage variants The highest soil loss in all the three investigation years was recorded in the check - standard variant according to USLE, which involves tilled but unsown soil - without vegetation cover. Losses in this variant are several times higher than tolerant erosion (T values), estimated at 12 t/ha/yr. In conventional up/down the slope ploughing, erosional drifts were higher than tolerance if spring crops were grown, but not in the case of winter wheat. In the no-tillage variant, erosion was twice higher than tolerant in maize production, slightly higher than tolerant in soybean, and insignificant in winter wheat. All variants involving ploughing across the slope, viz. conventional ploughing ; very deep ploughing ; and subsoiling + conventional ploughing rendered satisfactory efficiency for soil protection from erosion in the growing of all the studied crops (with the exception of maize in very deep ploughing). Since erosion did not surpass the tolerant soil loss threshold in these tillage practices, their application is recommended for the general practice.
