Comparison of salivary sodium and potassium concentrations measured by portable meters and an automated biochemical analyser

The ongoing interest in exploring salivary changes related to the disease and identifying constituents that might serve as diagnostic biomarkers is based on the simple and noninvasive sampling procedure. The possibility of using point-of-care measurement methods adds to the simplicity of the analytical procedures and thus might gain preferrence in scientific research over laboratory methods. Ion-selective electrode pocket meters have become available for measuring ion concentrations in various samples, including saliva. Such devices could be convenient to assess the relation between sialochemical changes and different factors, such as the effect of drugs on salivation. This study was conducted to compare sodium and potassium concentrations measured by portable meters and an automated biochemical analyser. Electrolytes were measured in a total of 91 sample. Uncentrifuged samples were used for measurements performed by LAQUAtwin Na-11 and LAQUAtwin K-11 (Horiba UK Limited, Northampton, UK) and centrifuged saliva was used with fully- automated Alinity c analyzer (Abbott Laboratories, Chicago, USA). Passing-Bablok regression and Bland-Altman plots were used to assess agreement between two methods. The average of the differences were 2.31 mmol/L (95%CI=2.084-2.531) and 1.99 mmol/L (95%CI=1.558-2.426) for sodium and potassium, respectively (p<0.0001). The results indicate that LAQUAtwin meters measure lower values of both analytes.
