National survey of antibiotic and analesics prescribing in dentistry in Croatia from 2013 to 2018

Antibiotics and analgesic are the most prescribed medications in dentistry. Indications for the use of antibiotics are limited and they include systemic symptoms of spreading oral bacterial infection and prophylaxis for patients at risk. Analgesic are commonly prescribed for pain relief after operative intervention. Data were obtained from the Croatian Institute of Public Health for time period from 2013 to 2018. Consumption of the antibiotics and analgesic was expressed using WHO defined daily doses (DDDs) and DDDs per 1000 inhabitants per day (DIDs). For this study we analyzed data for 14 antibiotics 9 analgesics. There was an increase in use of most antibiotics as well as most pain relief medications. Penicillins were the most commonly prescribed antibiotics category, with amoxicillin with clavulanate as most frequently prescribed of all (56, 4%). Out of analgesics, most commonly prescribed was ibuprofen, with increase in prescriptions for 131% for given time period. Analyzed data of this study showed that dentists in Croatia prescribe increased quantities of antibiotics and analgesics, which is concerning. We may conclude that prescribing practices of dentists in Croatia could be improved by national program and education, which may enhance awareness among dental practitioners of the rationality in medication prescribing.
