Antibiotic prescribing patterns in Kosovo University Dental Clinical Centre

Antibiotic prescribing in dentistry is in rising trends, as well as increasing occurrence of bacterial resistance. The aim of this study was to examine the pattern of antibiotics prescribed by dentists in Kosovo. Participants were directly contacted. Out of 114 invited dentists, 80 took a part in a survey. The survey form consisted of two parts: part with general data and part with the specific questions regarding indications, duration, type, and dosage of antibiotic therapy. The dentists prescribed antibiotics to 696 patients. The first choice antibiotics were penicillin (72 % of patients), represented equally by amoxicillin in combination with clavulanic acid (36.5%) and amoxicillin alone (35, 1%). The most common indications for the prescribed antibiotics were periapical or periodontal abscess (25%) followed by post-extraction (20%). Antibiotic therapy usually lasted 7 days (87%). The doctors prescribed daily doses of antibiotics according to the instructions for the use of specific drugs. The patterns of antibiotics prescriptions by dental practitioners in Kosovo are irrational in terms of the right indication. These results are showing the need for continuous education in antibiotic prescribing and antimicrobial resistance for the development of better practices and prudent use of antibiotics.
