“The Femme Fatale and/or the Female Psychopath? – The Case of Killing Eve's (2018-) Villanelle"
Villanelle, initially introduced in Luke Jennings’s novel Codename Villanelle (2014) and popularized in BBC America’s television series adaptation which debuted in 2018, is a highly contested character. As it will be argued throughout the paper, both critics and scholars who have written on the series do not seem to agree as to Villanelle’s classification. Therefore, the paper aims at examining two figures that are often evoked while exploring Villanelle – that of the femme fatale and that of the female psychopath. Precisely, the paper’s intention is to investigate the extent to which Villanelle’s characterization complies with the two figures. Finally, drawing inspiration from Julie Grossman, the paper will refer to the concept of the femme moderne, arguing that could encompass, more fully, the complexity of contemporary female villains.
