“(In)Visibility or Recognition? Transgender Representation in RuPaul’s Drag Race (2009-) and Ryan Murphy's Pose (2018-)"
The “You’ve got she-mail” catchphrase, season six’s mini-challenge “Female or Shemale, ” and RuPaul's The Guardian interview on not allowing transgender contestants to participate in the show, fueled controversy among RDPR viewers. Although drag has the ability to disrupt, in Butler’s words, the "intelligibility" or "coherence" among the categories of sex, gender, and sexuality (Gender Trouble 23), the paper aims at analyzing how RPDR (re)enforces exclusory categories of recognition. Ultimately, the paper aims at inquiring into Ryan Murphy’s series Pose (2018-) to discuss whether it signifies a radical shift in contemporary transgender representation.
