An Online Study Program in Journalism in Croatia: A Need or an Opportunity

This paper presents the results obtained from one of the parts of a three-year international institutional scientific project on the " ; Higher Education of Journalists in a Digital Environment" ; (HEJDE), which was carried out at Juraj Dobrila University of Pula. That project activity' s main purpose is to consider the feasibility of a potential online study program in journalism in Croatia. Whilst, in some countries, students have had the possibility to study journalism online for years, this is not the case in South- Eastern Europe. This qualitative case study continues the discourse about the worldwide trends in distance learning and online study programs that educate journalists, taking sustainable journalism education as a perspective. We have started from the fact that the strong interdependence of journalism and journalism education with technology has increased during the pandemic and that in most of those countries, especially in the former Yugoslavian ones, journalism is still not a standardized profession. The central goal of this research was to determine the internal/external micro/macro indicators by using an analytical method and the SWOT and PESTLE tools aiming to reduce risks before launching this study program. The results show that the strengths and possibilities may overcome the most serious weaknesses and threats facing this project, even with regard to the major concerns, such as the financial aspect entailing a number of educational and organizational settings. In conclusion, this unique endeavor is timely, and there is a need for such a modern, quickly adaptable and pedagogically innovative journalism study program in Croatia.
