Spiritual Ecofeminism and the Soul, Human and Animal
Spiritual Ecofeminism and the Soul, Human and Animal In a time when a sharp dichotomy is drawn between, on the one hand, the body and mind as a refuge for materialism, and, on the other, the soul as the site of spiritual phenomena, this article sets off to outline the basic premises of spiritual ecofeminism as manifested in its program as well as its concept of the soul. This spiritual current is then opposed to modern technological transhumanism, which completely denies the phenomena of the soul. The idea of transhumanism promises the human that through technology he/she (or it) will transcend his/her limits, as Theodor Sturgeon has stated in his novel More Than Human (1953). In short, we can say that while the rationalism of R. Descartes took away the soul from animals (non-human animals), transhumanism does the same to humans (human animals), and therefore to all Earthlings. In conclusion, I point out that the works of radical (cultural) and/or spiritual feminists (e.g. Susan Griffin, Starhawk, Riane Eisler and Charlene Spretnak), while acknowledging the historical link between women, animals and nature, do not advocate either vegetarianism/veganism or the movement for animal rights, i.e. animal liberation (Greta Gaard). Thus, although spiritual ecofeminism calls for the opening of the soul, it still turns away from the question of the soul of the animal.
