Online professional development that helps teachers to improve their teaching practices

A group of 13 biology and mathematics teachers along with a group of six researchers were involved in an action research project that began in November 2019 as part of teacher professional development program aimed at improving teaching practices. Given the current coronavirus pandemic, teachers engaged only in online learning activities: asynchronous discussions on recorded lessons on the Moodle forum and synchronous meetings via the Zoom application. Teachers’ online learning was based on Situated Learning and Constructivism. Videos of teaching played an important role in our professional development program because they facilitated the analysis of teaching. Some of the changes in teaching were a wider application of problem tasks and higher order thinking activities. In addition, our online and video-based teacher professional development program helped achieve cohesion within the online learning community, making teachers more reflective, more willing to learn from each other, and more confident in their work. Several teachers also engaged in preparation and facilitation of meetings of online learning communities. In the last stage of the action research, teachers contributed to the preparation of learning materials for teachers who will be participating in the next project phase, i.e the experimental research.
