Factor analysis in the holistic study of population structure
In the isolate population of eastern Adriatic, Croatia, measures of biological and genetic distances between inhabitants of five island populations were calculated. The sample included a total of 6, 286 examinees from 43 villages, and the methods for data collecting and processing were standardised for all five island populations. Patterns of correlations between 17 distance matrices based on examined traits in both sexes were analysed based on Mantel's test of matrix correspondence. A higher-order varimax rotation over factor correlation matrix indicated that the major source for population variability was neither sex-related nor variable-specific, but rather lied in the interaction of population intrinsic (variational) characteristics, and the extrinsic (homogenisational) impacts of their environment.
