Differences in motivation factors for engaging in leisure activities in student population

The motivation of a young person to spend part of his free time practicing recreational sports is influenced by various external/environmental and internal/dispositional factors. The aim of the study is to determine whether there is a difference in motivational factors in students who participated in physical activity in their leisure time with respect to gender and type, i.e. the course of study. The study was carried out on a total of 107 students (53 male students and 54 female students) of the first and second year of the professional study of Hospitality, Security and care and Mechanical engineering at the Karlovac University of Applied Sciences. The average age of students is 19.82 ± 1.09 years. Student motivation was measured using the free time Motivation scale (LMS), and it was derived from Maslowl's hierarchy of needs. Statistical data processing was performed in the SPSS statistical program. A T- test for independent samples was used to determine gender difference, while a one-way univariable analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used for examining the differences between studies. The results obtained indicate that there is a statistically significant difference between the three studies on the subscale “Avoiding incentive claims” (F = 4.52 ; p = 0.01), while there is no significant difference between male and female students in motivational factors for engaging in leisure activity although results show lower scores of male students on all four subscales.
