he Urban Heat Island in Zagreb: causes and characteristics
The main issues related to the climate change and particularly those connected to the climate of Zagreb are discussed. Urban environments experience higher temperatures than their rural surroundings. Not only local processes, but also regional as well global processes affect the urban climate. Among many other negative impacts, high air temperatures can harm human health. Particularly vulnerable are elderly people, those with chronic diseases and kids. It is therefore crucial to lower heat stress in urban environments. Heat stress in the city is affected with both the city structure and global climate change. Urbanization is a strong contributor to heat load and implementing green infrastructure is one of the most important measures for reducing urban heat stress. However, its efficiency strongly depends on soil moisture and water availability. Therefore, in urban planning is important to take into account watering of green areas.
