The Humanistic Dimension of Rest as a Basic Human Need

In this paper, the question of rest is considered from a philosophical-bioethical perspective, especially in a way that rest is deliberated not as a waste of precious time, but exclusively as a basic human value, and a benefit for the health and life of every man. The starting point of deliberations on rest, as seen by the authors, is the Biblical image of world creation, where the seventh day (the rest) is explicitly consecrated. The second chapter of Genesis states: “By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing ; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work. Then God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done” (Genesis 2, 2- 3). This Biblical image of solemnizing a day of the week by totally resting from all the work is, through a philosophical-critical approach of the authors, put into the context of today’s progressive, scientific-technical society, that is more and more burdened by capitalism, consumerism, and excessive greed for power. In such a globalized society, in which a man is no more than a machine in service of work, instead of the other way around, contemporary man has a need for some fundamental turn, an ethos of life, in order to be able to access the question of rest as a basic human need and value.
