Numerical modeling of the Flow in an Organic Rankine Cycle Small Axial Turbine with Partial Admission
Utilization of low and medium temperature renewable energy sources, such as geothermal, solar and biomass energy, and waste heat of various technological processes requires the use of the Rankine Cycle with organic working fluid, so called Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC). With the selection of a suitable working fluid and the configuration of the ORC, the thermodynamic efficiency of the cycle is most influenced by the expander. Numerical simulations of flow will be performed on different geometries of the turbine flow part in order to determine the influence of geometric parameters (partial admission, pitch and axial chord of stator and rotor cascades, etc.) on flow characteristics and isentropic turbine efficiency. The result of the research will be recommendations for the design of small axial turbines for use in ORC plants. The final aim of the research will be a new type of small axial action-reaction multistage turbine with partial admission, intended for ORC, which will be competitive in efficiency with existing volume expanders.
