Labour Market Participation of Returnees and Second Generaton Croats in Croatia: Processes to Participation

Governments of struggling economies, such as Croatia, are becoming increasingly interested in the potential of return migrants to help build and strengthen their homelands. Return migration is viewed as a vehicle for bringing knowledge, skills and financial capital to the homeland (Pifat-Mrzljak, Juroš & Vizek-Vidović, 2006). There is a recognised need for return migration to be investigated as a multi-stage process to identify common antecedents leading to the return of members of the diaspora (Cassarino, 2004) with the aim of assisting this process. This study used in-depth interviews to investigate the reasons for return, the multi-stage process of return migration, planning stages, labour market participation of Croatians who return or move to Croatia, common personal characteristics present among those who returned and their self-identified lessons learnt. Results showed that most participants displayed information seeking transnational behaviours prior to return. They planned for periods of financial self-sufficiency. Some visited regularly or moved to a nearby country as a step prior to return. They participate in a variety of labour-market activities: retirement, studying, self-employment and salary-employment. Most displayed high levels of self-efficacy, determination and openness. They all placed minimal importance on politics.
