Integrating ELF into ELT: Comparative insights from Croatia and Finland
The status of English as a (global) lingua franca (ELF) calls for a change in the conceptualisation of the content, process and goals of English language teaching (ELT). This questionnaire-based study aims to examine secondary-school student perceptions of the current state of ELT in their respective educational environments and to enquire into their attitudes concerning the integration of ELF into ELT. The study adopts a comparative approach between two educational contexts as well as between the current state of ELT and its potential future outlook. The participants in the study were 174 secondary-school students: 96 from Tampere, Finland, and 78 from Rijeka, Croatia. The findings show that the students wish for more communication-oriented classrooms and more attention given to English language diversity. Nevertheless, the majority hold that ELT should be based on standard NS norms. The authors conclude that a more careful balance in teacher approach to English classes would be necessary.
